Counselling and Psychotherapy

Counselling is a process whereby the client meets with the therapist, usually once a week, to discuss problems that are affecting their everyday life. We explore the problem and try to find solutions for overcoming or managing them. Counselling tends to be more short term, usually lasting six to twelve weeks and often focuses on one specific problem that is affecting the client in the present.

Psychotherapy is usually a longer process that goes deeper into the root causes of problems and explores how issues from the past still affects you in the present. Sometimes clients need to return to their childhood to gain a deeper understanding of what is happening in the present. It is only then that the client can explore alternative options and make different choices for their present and future.

What to Expect from Your First Session

Clients sometimes feels nervous and anxious coming to their first counselling session and are unsure of what to expect. In this first session, I will ask clients to briefly tell me their reasons for coming to counselling at this time and will explore what the clients’ expectations of counselling are. From here, we will set goals for counselling and contract to work together towards these goals.

The counselling relationship is a vital part of the counselling process and it is imperative that clients feel safe and supported as they work through difficult issues. The length of time in counselling can vary but I will carry out a review every six weeks to ensure that you are benefitting from your counselling sessions.

Fees and Forms

All sessions last 60 minutes and cost €70. If you cancel less than 24 hours before your appointment, there is a requirement to pay the full €70 fee. During the first session, I will ask you to fill in a form with some contact details and information on our counselling contract including confidentiality.
